Scholarships for Legally Blind Students

While there are thousands of scholarships available to students based on course of study, academic achievement and ethnicity, there are also many awards offered to students with disabilities. For those who are legally blind, scholarships are offered mainly by associations such as the National Federation for the Blind (NFB), American Council of the Blind (ACB), American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), Association of Blind Citizens and Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER). In addition to supplying proof of vision status, candidates for these awards must meet other eligibility requirements including letters of recommendation, transcripts, personal essay and a specific GPA, usually at least a 3.0. The AER requires that students study for a career in which they would supply services to visually-impaired or blind individuals. Scholarships range from $1,000 - $4,000. Other awards are available from nonprofit organizations and privately-funded memorial scholarships. In addition, some colleges and universities fund scholarships for legally blind students.
