Scholarships for Foreign Nationals

International students who wish to pursue their higher education in the U.S. could face financial difficulties when it comes to tuition. Luckily, there are many sources of scholarships for foreign nationals. These sources include foundations, private corporations, educational organizations, professional associations and colleges and universities. The Fulbright Education Exchange Program is a federal program managed by the U.S. Department of State; funds from this program benefit foreign students studying in the U.S. More than 160 countries participate in this program. An extensive application process must be completed to be eligible for this award. Various corporations and individual schools also offer scholarships for foreign nationals. Eligibility requirements vary, but may include applicants pursuing a particular field of study, previous academic achievement and financial need. The John Carter Brown Library (JCB) offers two fellowships, short-term and long-term, for advanced research on Brown University. Approximately forty residential fellowships for the year 2016 to 2017 will be awarded. Short-term fellowships will receive a monthly stipend of $2,100 while long-term fellowships are given $4,200 monthly stipend. Scholars and writers working on all aspects of the Americas in the early modern period ware eligible to apply.

The scholarship is founded in honor of Liang-Lin Hsiao who was a professor of economics at Indiana State University. It is awarded to a graduate student attending US-based college or university and pursuing a graduate degree in economics. Applicant must be of Asian heritage (at least 50%); however, students of Chinese descent are given preference. Students pursuing a career in academia (teaching or research) are also given a higher preference.
